Synergy Plus is a full featured hardware RAID system specifically designed to work in the Avid Unity environment. With sixteen SATA II drives and Archion's high speed RAID controller it provides the speed and the protection that is absent from Unity's normal storage.

Standard Avid Unity storage requires the user to mirror his storage in order to provide any level of protection. So the 2TB of expensive Avid storage you purchased really on has 1TB of useable workspace. In standard mirroring situations two copies of data is written across two discrete drives. This gives two copies of the data, one copy on each drive. So if one drive dies, the other one has a copy. Unity does it's mirroring across a whole data set of drives. Data is copied across drives, so there is really no way to assure no data loss in case one or two drives failing.

Synergy Plus uses a dedicated, RAID controller that writes both data and parity code across the RAID sets. This controller is separate from the Unity system and handles all data read and write requests, as well as rebuild operations in case of a drive failure. If a drive fails the controller reads the parity code on the remaining drives and rebuilds the failed drive to the included hot spare drive in the unit. Unattended and automatically, Unity keeps on running as if nothing happened. Unity is not slowed down by rebuilds and you keep editing with no downtime.

Synergy Plus is easy to setup and manage. It comes pre-configured for Unity, just plug in the two 2gig FC ports to the storage ports on your Unity MediaSwitch turn it on and add the new raw drives to a data set. All the Unity set and management tools work as normal.
